WTAO (FM?), WCOP-FM, WTTK

I do not believe that 96.9 ever sported the
WTAO-FM call-letters for very long (if ever). It was
WXHR(FM) co-owned by the Lyman Brothers and eventually
became WXHR-FM when WTAO/740 gave up the ghost on
separated programming in the early 1960's. It
remained a simulcast until Kaiser/Globe bought the
combo (as well as Channel 56) in 1966. The AM went
silent for a few months in 1967 in preparation for
WCAS. The FM became WJIB in May, 1967 with the famous
Stereo beautiful music ("ding, ding...."). They
limped along from Zion Hill in Woburn, MA until the
Commercial Wharf studios were built.
WCOP-FM became WTTK ("TK/101") at 6:00 AM on
October 4th, 1976 with a somewhat hybrid Country/Rock
automated format that quickly evolved in to an Album
Format a few months later. It was not to last for
long. Plough was planning to dump the Boston stations
all along and in 1978 sold the WACQ/WTTK combo to the
Tangers who quickly changed the two stations to WHUE
on January 1, 1979 at midnight. So there you are!
As for WTKK, these call-letters used to be on an
Manassas, VA UHF station (Channel 66) for many years.
They now are on today's "96.9 FM Talk (WTKK)".

Cheers,
-Peter Q.
