I think 96.9 began with some sort of experimental calls -- perhaps W2XHR -- then became WXHR 
when it became a regular commercial station, sometime in the late 40s or early 50s.  It became 
WXHR-FM in the mid-1960s (1965, I think) when WTAO became WXHR and began simulcasting the 
classical programming.
