WPAA-FM Off Air; I Finally Pick Up WNEF
Maybe it was in response to exhortations for people to turn off any unnecessary
electrical appliances, but Phillips Academy in Andover, MA finally pulled the
plug (temporarily I presume) on WPAA-FM 91.7. For a long time, WPAA has been
left on-the-air with an unmodulated carrier during vacation periods when the
school is closed. This so far has prevented me from picking up the new FM
in Newburyport, MA: WNEF. With WPAA gone, I oriented my antenna for best
reception from the NE, but WNEF, although audible, was not able to provide enough
signal strength for stereo. An oddity: when I rotated the antenna back to its
usual position for optimal Boston-area stations, WHUS-FM, Storrs, CT
was audible and seemingly stronger than WNEF. Also, WJUL 91.5 FM
in Lowell was off last night (it was on during the day with readings for the
visually impaired) and once again I got some kind of signal for a
period of time from WNYE in the Apple. It keeps happenig whether on a
hot humid night, or in mid-winter when WJUL is down on cold dry nights!
