Me thinks you are perpetuating the incorrect grade - school history
myth that 500 years ago the  'every one but Columbus thought the earth
was flat' back then. It actually was known that the earth was a sphere,
back then. In fact some 2,200 years ago the Greek Scientist Eratosthenes
had calculated the fairly acurately the circumfrence of the planet. Why
would he bother if it was known the 'Earth was flat'?
