Entercom AM's Sound Crappy

This morning (08/06) I tuned in for a while to WRKO-AM because Tom the Taxinator
(Tom Finneran Speakah of the House, in Mass) and O3 were doing the morning 
show.  Apart from any of the content, I noticed that there was a
sporadic
crackling sound and the audio was a bit distorted (as if O3 didn't already
sound distorted!)  I remember that the late lamented radio-info.com
Boston Board had entries about WEEI's strange-sounding signal months ago, so 
I flipped to AM 850 on a very good-sounding radio (the one I use to listen 
to LTAR) and WEEI still sounded tinny and lacking in presence.
Are the Entercom AM's so tight for funds that they can't maintain their
transmitters?  I trust the signal leaving Guest St.  doesn't sound that bad!
