As a "lurker" in this group for quite a while, I thought it was time I
contributed something...
I can't speak for Pittsfield but can for Fitchburg. I guess it depends
on what is meant by "aren't doing so well." Getting competent salespeople is
indeed difficult. They just don't seem to be out there. But there are
opportunities for the right people...
We too are looking for salespeople, especially those who can be excited
about local, small-market radio (commercial mode "off"). Things seem to be
tough all over, and stand-alone non-metro AM's are no exception. However, we
are doing what we can to continue to be a vital part of the communities we
serve. As an example, our 4th of July coverage included live reports from
the Longsjo bike races, the July 3rd block party, the July 4th parade and
live coverage of the July 4th "Youth at the Pops concert by the Thayer
Symphony Orchestra.
Our relationship with the listeners and advertisers in northern
Worcester County is as strong, if not stronger than it has been in recent
memory. Our programming, while not 100% local, is better than it has been
for quite some time. (Both, I.M.H.O.). There is obviously room for
improvement on both fronts and sales is of course the engine that drives the
train.
Red Sox baseball, local news, a live morning show whose host (Ray "C")
has won countless community service awards a local p.m. Sports talk show,
great syndicated talk programming. Not too shabby. The little engine that
can...(ok, now commercial mode truly "off"...)
