Text formatting (was Re: More on Clear Channel)
Garrett: I don't think that request is reasonable. I'm
pretty sure that Outlook Express inserts hard returns at
the ends of the lines it creates from the paragraphs I
type. But that's the software's job, not mine. LOTS of
software considers each paragraph to be a single text
string and that ought to be fine. There are many good
reasons for designing text editors and word processors
in this way. The most obvious is that such designs make
inserting and deleting _much_ easier because insertions
and deletions don't mess up the display and print
formatting.
Have you ever tried editing copy after hard returns have
been inserted? What a bear--and the grief is
unnecessary. All it takes to eliminate the problems is
software that doesn't insert hard returns. The
recipient's software should handle word-wrap and should
take care of formatting the paragraphs so that they are
displayed and printed in a resonable manner. If your
software doesn't do that, get software that does. I
don't believe that the Unix world has no such packages.
If there truly are no such packages in Unix, then Unix
afficionados don't deserve their reputation for being
smart people.
