A friend of mine had one many many years ago.  It was essentially a 
reel-to-reel tape recorder that used a fine steel wire as a recording 
media.  As I recall, fidelity wasn't all that great.

I wouldn say they were more a product of the late 30s/40s than early 20th 
century.
