Since Cheap Channel bought into the New Haven
market, it consolidated its stations into the WELI
studio building at Radio Towers Park in Hamden (also
the WELI transmitter site). There now are WELI, WAVZ
and WKCI.
On the WKCI city of license: the COL is, as
always, Hamden. It IDs, often in-between two spots at
10-15 minutes before the hour, as Hamden-New Haven.
But the FCC database shows Hamden. Although
Orange-Athol is, as you said, the legal COL for WCAT,
there are not many cases of that. Of all the AM and FM
stations in Minneapolis and St. Paul, for example, I
believe the only one that is a dual COL is the public
radio FM station, St. Paul-Minneapolis. The others are
one city or the other, although without exception, I'm
pretty sure, they all ID as Minneapolis-St. Paul or
the other way around.
On the WKSS city of license: It was changed from
just Meriden to Hartford-Meriden in, I believe, the
'60s, coinciding with the studios moving to Hartford.
The transmitter is, as always on West Peak, Meriden.
This station originally was WMMW-FM, started in about
1948, only a year or two after WMMW (AM) was set up as
Meriden's local community daytimer. I've always
wondered what the history was that the COL became
Hartford-Meriden instead of Meriden-Hartford. This ID
also can often be heard said in a whisper, very fast,
between two spots, arond 10 before the hour.
Maybe we could invite stations to enter the
Marconi-Armstrong book of broadcasting world records
competition under the heading, largest number of
consecutive years without doing an actual proper legal
ID. What's that? There'd be too many competitors and
we couldn't deal with the volume of entries? What was
I thinking of. :))
