I think it was mentioned here last week that, when it comes to the Super
Bowl (and maybe the conference championships as well?  I can't remember),
the NFL contract mandates that the national radio network (WW1) takes
precedence over any local/regional radio network, with the exception
of the latter network's flagship station.

In other words, the only station permitted to carry the WBCN/Patriots
radio network call of the game was WBCN themselves.  WGIR was just
following the NFL's rule on the matter.
