I couldn't agree with you more. As mentioned, this is
a fairly common occurence in smaller markets, but even
so I think it sounds absolutely ridiculous, cheap,
cheesy and low budget. I remember back in Rochester
NY, they even had a station that did that. WYSL (1040
AM, licensed to Avon 20 miles south of Rochester but
still putting a decent signal into Rochester proper
day and night) used to simulcast WOKR-TV's noon and 6
PM newscasts. And for a little AM that was trying to
compete in Rochester as a real all-news station
against 50 kw heirtage blowtorch WHAM, that, in my
opinion just didn't cut it (and if you look at the
ratings, I don't think I'm the only person that felt
that way either). Heck, even if I was a small market
PD at an AM station running a feed of AP radio news or
something to that effect, I would still refuse to
carry the audio track of a TV news cast, because, IMHO
it just doesn't work
