Re: WCSH signing off

The tower with the "considerable height" out by Sebago Lake is probably
the new WMTW-TV tower, recently constructed in Baldwin, ME---about 1
mile from the WCSH tower on Winn Mountain. It's a big tower---I got a
look at it recently and it appears to be taller than the WCSH tower,
which is about 1400 ft. Waterfront property owners on the eastern shore
of Sebago now have two large VHF towers to gaze at---perhaps the
additional tower will make Sebago an even greater tourist attraction.
(For reference, the tallest tower around, the WGME-TV--WBLM-FM tower, is
on the eastern shore of Sebago, off Route 302 in Raymond.)

BTW, not sure about the WCSH late night sign-offs...my guess is either
transmitter maintenance or DT TX installation. I know WCSH's DT
transmitter was ordered early last summer---our GM and CE said it was
the biggest purchase order they'd ever signed for!

As far as I know there's nothing else on the WMTW-DT tower. The WCSH
tower is also the longtime home of Maine Public Radio's 90.1 FM---the
calls escape me for the moment---WMEA? On a historical note, the
current WCSH tower is the station's third tower in its 45+year history.
The original tower, from which Channel 6 signed on in 1953 (or 4) still
stands atop Blackstrap Mountain in Falmouth. (It is now used as an
emergency backup). In the 1960s WCSH moved the transmitter to its
current site on Winn Mountain...the first tower at the site collapsed in
a massive ice storm in the mid 80s. That tower was replaced with the one
you see up there now.
