RE: WHOM/WPKQ STL Question

As one of the many former PDs at WPKQ, nee WZPK, the way the signal got to
the top of Mt Washington is a pretty interesting one.

The signal NOW is a standard Mosley STL, from the building across for the
train station in North Conway, but the old system was MUCH cooler.

When WZPK's studios were in Berlin, (whew, I can still smell the paper mill)
the audio traveled on a balanced stereo phone line to a hill on the
outskirts of town where there was a minor tower farm. The audio jumped off
the phone lines to a secondary audio channel of a microwave relay for
Canadian Television Programming that was shot to the top of the Mountain for
relay. (Thus the reason the audio sounded "less than robust")

We had SERIOUS problems with the phone line when I was there. A lightning
storm cooked most of the telco gear at the demark at the microwave site, and
getting a telco repair guy who understood balanced lines was a bit of an
issue. (I had to pring in an Engineer for Portland.)

FYI, there is some really unique federal stuff on top of the small hill
where the microwave shot originated from.

take care...

Subject: WHOM/WPKQ STL Question

How does WHOM/WPKQ get their signals to Mt Washington? Do they use Microwave
STL or Telco-Line?
