Boston Catholic Television (Was 103.5FM...now 'Memory Lane')
The Boston Catholic Television Center used to
operate "in school" programming using ITFS
(Instructional Television Fixed Service) transmitters,
on the microwave bands. These receivers used
downconverters to convert the signal to VHF Channels
11 and 13 on the school MATV (Master Antenna TV
System). The ITFS system (KVQ-24) is still in
operation to this day. However, it is strictly used
to relay the BCTV service to various cable systems
throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Channel 38 WIHS-TV (now WSBK-TV) was the
predecessor of the ITFS service. BCTV "in-school"
programming was seen on Channel 38 from 9:00am until
3:00pm from 1964 until 1968. Storer bought Channel 38
in 1966 but continued the daytime BCTV slate until
Boston Catholic got their ITFS service in place in
1968 on the Pru. Channel 38 had originally
transmitted on The Prudential Tower as well until
1969, when they co-located with Channel 56 at the
Candlabra in Needham, a situation that still exists
today.
