Joe,

   yeah.  with the amount of newer equipment such as the ongoing discussion
about ENCO and SCOTT, it's almost a necessity.  granted, some operations,
such as the one at Greater Media in Boston, are accessible by an engineer
from their home p.c.'s, but there are times when the actual use of a
screwdriver are important to keep the product top-notch and on the air.
plus, as any of the broadcast engineers on this list can attest, more
equipment maintenance was completed at 0200 than at 1130, any day of the
week.  fewer interruptions make for a smoother process.  yes, there are
times when the part you need is not readily available at 0200; at 1130, it
might easier to obtain a missing piece from a local distributor.  on the
whole, though, an on-duty engineer adds an extra level of safety, security
and peace of mind for the other professionals who are doing their craft.
