Re: WMTW call letters (was Re: NERW 5/7: Farewell, old CHUM)

As I recall, 1490 in Portland was WMTW (AM) a fairly long time before there
was a WMTW-TV or a WMTW-FM. Although the TV and FM stations apparently
considered Portland to be their primary market, I don't think there was any
connection between the little AM and the big TV and FM. My understanding is
that the WMTW calls were gone from 1490 before they appeared on Channel 8. I
have no idea whether the WMTW calls on the AM were supposed to suggest Mount
Washington, but if that wasn't the intent, what could the calls have stood
for? Can you see the top of Mt Washington from Portland on a clear day? If
we learn what the WMTW calls stood for when they were first used on AM in
Portland, we should know why they were chosen. I guess that Donna Halper
really isn't that deeply into Maine Radio, but we could certainly make use
of her skills as a radio historian/detective to unravel this one. I haven't
a clue.
