Now if you had said that a newbie (to the area) might 
say Woe-burn instead of Woo-burn, I could get it, but I 
don't see a difference between Wu-burn and Woo-burn. Can 
you explain?

And what about Havv-er-hill with both h's pronounced and 
a flat a (as in "that") in the first syllable? When I 
was in college in Troy New York, before I ever thought 
of moving to Massachusetts, I pronounced Haverhill that 
way to a guy from the Merrimac Valley. I think he felt 
he had two options--punch me out or split his sides 
laughing. Thankfully he chose the latter, but he never 
let me forget for the rest of my college career.
