Maybe the newscaster meant to say "nationalists"
(someone supporting the idea of Puerto Rico gaining
independence as a separate nation) or "Puerto Rican
natives".

By the way, I think many people, including some on-
air, mispronounce the name of the island; as I
understand it, it's "PWAYRE-to REE-co", not
"PORT-o REE-co".
