Welcome to the real world :) If you read the fine print, provisions
in standard cable service contracts for most MSO's CATV systems allow
collection of anonymous viewing data for marketing research. Of course,
there are a number of safeguards that prevent cable companies
from identifying individual household viewing data.
However, there are already data tracking systems such as Comcast's
TargetTV which monitors cable viewing in mostly unaware
households. At least, with Nielsen diaries and People Meters, viewers
know beforehand that their viewing choices are being 'watched'.
