There is all manner of behavior that isn't inherently "wrong," but is
nonetheless reserved by people of taste for private moments. Pinching a
breast, patting a buttock, or planting a long, wet one on your wife if front
of tens of millions of people may not be obscene, but it's entirely
unnecessary ... even in an orchestrated political situation intended to
convey a contrasting image of Gore as a loving husband and devoted family
man. Such overt PDAs are forbidden under the military code and frowned upon
in many circles of polite and refined company because they make people
uncomfortable. (What do you do? Stare at them; avert your glance; check out
your shoes for scuffing; glance at your watch?)

Politically, it's really not much of an incident other than it coming from
the party that makes a Really Big Thing out of how attuned they are to
people's every little sensitivity.

However, if this is the worst thing Gore does between now and November 2nd,
he'll set a record for being the most careful campaigner on record.
