WGCH (NERW) & Thanks
WGCH's current tower is nearly surrounded by buildings, trees, parking lots,
etc, -- all within a couple of hundred feet.
Maybe the move will improve their signal. I never heard a 1kw ND station
with this tiny of a coverage area. WGCH has a poor signal in the north part
of its town of license. The signal was so poor that when we were working
down there last summer, we thought that either WGCH was off the air and
another 1490 was coming in, or (after we heard the ID) WGCH was running very
low power (250w or maybe a lot less during daytime hours). The coverage area
is similar to the mini power night signals some stations have in the 5 to 50
watt range.
Well, best wishes to WGCH in their quest for a new tower location -- better
efficiency & a bigger coverage area!
And a note to Scott.
Thanks for NERW. It's a great source of info for many of us radio addicts.
Your work IS appreciated -- so again, Thanks for the great job you do with
NERW.
from NERW:
In Greenwich, WGCH (1490) wants to move its tower from the current
site off West Putnam Avenue to a new stick near the North Street
School, and amazingly, the school board is playing along -- sort of.
They're trying to craft wording that will prevent WGCH from using its
new tower for anything but AM broadcasts
Happy snowstorm to all
