Wood Hill, Andover

A few days a go, a correspondent to b-r-i mentioned
that the venerable standalone tower on Wood Hill in
Andover had nearly disappeared. Since daylight saving
time is not in effect, I haven't had a chance to go
up there to see what's happening up close until now.

(BTW, if you've only observed the new 99.5 operation
from the highway, there's a paved road that takes you
right to the base of the tower: go west on Rt 133
from I93; in slightly less than a mile turn
right at the Barron's Country Store onto Haggett's
Pond Rd; just after you pass UNDER route 495, the
road rises a little and almost axactly 1 mile from
the Country Store a "Holmes Road" sign appears on
your right and is paved right to the new 99.5 tower
and the remains of the old one).
 Greater Media
has a sign at the entrance to the new WKLB antenna
with a phone number to call if you want to lease
space on that tower (what; the money's not flowing
into the coffers of Talk 96.9?). The old
standalone has been dismantled to just above the
base, but there was no construction equipment
around. Either they will stop there, or the recent
blast of arctic air and pesky winds interrupted their
work. There's a new cellular tower up there that's
been added since the last time I paid a visit. If G.M.
owns that land, the site is a good one for some kind
of utilitarian communications facility; the current
WKLB tower had a main antenna on top and a side-mounted
auxiliary setup.
