it used to go without saying that we, the broadcasters, did consider the
possibilities. i, like mike, use radio diz, even with the scratchy am sig
all the way up in South Portland in the morning when driving the kids to
school. the two "chr/top40" stations in the morning insist on being 25 plus
in am drive. grown-up/sexual topics and themes along with trite terms of
non-endearment. all this while the kids just want to hear Britney or BSB for
the five minute cruise to class.
i try to keep in mind that my kids, your kids, anyone's kids could be
listening. especially if they're with mom and dad. i guess age has mellowed
me somewhat in that i no longer get the thrill in hearing if something
"really sucks" or even worse on the radio. (did i laugh when the SNL skit
featured the song "...the movie makes a million bucks, even if it really
sucks." ?? yep.) however, and i am by no way a prude when it comes to
offering up expletives, i prefer and choose not use those words most of us
consider vuglar and crude in front of my kids. the fear: they'll use them
in front of their grandparents. (i've been taken to task by my 15 year old
for using the word "freaking" in lieu of...)
in defense of RadioDisney, i have no problem with their "clutter" and
promotion. it's a safe haven for little ears (in my case, 6 & 11) without
having to explain what an implant is and why is it so bad that Britney might
have them.
