having worked for the same corporation, Dan, they do not do, on an ongoing
basis, the same type of work that is done at, as an example, a WIDE under
Gold Coast. you may remember we did things there on a regular, every day
basis which went to serve our little, local listenership. in much the same
light, the WCAP's of the world do things on an everyday basis that the other,
corporately owned stations have let fall away. Stuffing the Mayflower, a
noble cause taken on by WMGX, is done once a year.
the station at which i'm currently employed takes on an annual cause, as do
most of the "bigger" stations. it's too bad that the "bigger" stations could
not carry that warm, touchy-feely thing throughout the year.
additionally, most of the bigger holiday "causes" tend to be sponsored, as
well.
i find that the "selling" of the noble cause to be reprehensible. and it's
prevalent everywhere, at every level, even where i work. one would think
that something to be done as a benefit, even once a year, should not include
the phrase: "brought to you by..." yeah, there are expenses, real and
perceived, involved in doing a charitable function, but does it not remove
the "giving" portion from the equation?
i would agree that so long as the targeted beneficiary of these good works
and undertakings does benefit, then mission is accomplished. it just doesn't
set well when the "good works" are also not considered unless they can be
sponsored.
