Re: Why don't more stations webcast? (Was Re: web-WHRB in today's Globe)
Another reason many stations do not webcast, as was hinted to before, is
because some big broadcast companies have company-wide bans on webcasting.
When I asked a friend of mine who is an Entercom employee why they have such
a ban in place, the response I got was that realaudio streaming has little
to no effect on the station's ratings in ITS own home market, and that the
Company did not want to "give away" its stations product to a company like
broadcast.com or Microsoft (Windows Media Player) when they can turn around
and make a profit off of it by running their spots right before the
Realaudio player picks up the station's feed. I by no means endorse this
train of thought; I think it is a very shortsighted, greedy way of doing
business. But I thought you'd want to know some of the other reasons given
for why so few radio stations webcast.
