Mmmm...I'm going to side with Garrett on this one. When King Broadcasting
sold the radio properties, 1090 went (eventually) to CBS, which now
runs it as country oldies (via satellite) KRPM. 98.1 FM was donated
by the Bullitt sisters (the King Broadcasting families) to a community
non-profit organization to ensure that the station would remain
classical in perpetuity (sound familiar, Charles River Broadcasting?).
Channel 5 (and now the LMA for channel 16 in Everett) remained with
King until it was sold to A.H. Belo a few years back.
Now, as for 98.1: it is *operated* by Entercom Seattle under an LMA.
The Entercom building on Eastlake Ave. shows a KING-FM logo among
the many on the door (KIRO 710, KNWX 770, KQBZ 100.7, KBSG 97.3, Mariners
Radio Network -- and that doesn't include the other Entercom properties
at different locations, KISW 99.9, KMTT 103.7 and KNDD 107.7).
Seattle has gotten very consolidated -- one could now promo-raid
most of the city with four stops, five tops:
Entercom, Eastlake Ave: KIRO, KNWX, KQBZ, KING-FM, KBSG
Entercom, Olive Way: KMTT, KNDD, KISW
CBS, Dexter Ave (I thikn that's where they consolidated): KMPS, KYCW,
KZOK, KBKS, KRPM
Fisher Broadcasting, 7th Ave: KVI, KOMO, KPLZ
Ackerley, Queen Anne Ave: KJR, KJR-FM, KUBE
(and then one could cross the bridge to Bellevue for the Sandusky
Broadcasting combo of KWJZ, KLSY, KIXI, KWRM, and KSRB...)
One more thing: I mentioned KING-TV 5, and I mentioned their LMA
partner on channel 16. Its calls? KONG(TV)!
More on Seattle and Vancouver to come...
