That can work.  One receiver I've used this tactic on is the Sony SRF-A100, 
an AM Stereo/FM Stereo portable from the mid-80s.  The FM section is 
notoriously susceptible to overload, and I've found that folding down the whip 
helps quell strong signals bearing down on the front end.  Usually, though, I 
end up switching the local/distant switch to local.  The downside of these 
strategies is that *all* stations become weaker; WCRB would have to be 
strong *enough* to present enough signal to the now-desensitized front end.  
(Ironically, the Sony's AM section is numb as can be in wideband mode and 
I have to use a Select-A-Tenna to make it usable.)
