In many cases we have them simulcasting the audio in AM mono.  Skip and 
interference are a major problem as well as the fact that most AM car 
tuners these days are crap.  It doesn't help that today's generation 
doesn't know what AM is any more.  The last few generations of FM systems 
out there are stereo (well at least the xmtrs are...some less than honest 
competitors of mine have sold "stereo" systems with a mono front end - they 
do make the neat FM Stereo light come on though).

Most drive-ins have eliminated or drastically reduced the speakers.

Where are you?  I'll direct you to a drive-in.
