There have been a few posts to this site about a
Spanish-language station in Lawrence operating illegally
on 99.9 mhz. Today (1/30/99) the Lawrence Eagle
Droppings Tribune ran a front-page story about it.
It can be accessed for now at www.eagletribune.com
but may be in the archives before this appears on the
boston-radio-interest page. There are few facts of
a technical nature except that it operates with 99
watts and a studio in downtown Lawrence. Transmitter
site isn't given...I pick it up clearly at home
in Methuen and on the highway pretty well in Salem,
NH and rt 93 until 495. WKLB's new tx blasts it
away there. Anyway, the proprietor is a preacher
named Jose Santos who is quoted as saying a lawyer
(not J. Ross Esq) told him it was ok if he operates
with less than 100 watts. Hmmm. Other preachers
with pirate stations (one at 1700 am) take a dim
view of having this guy operate on an FM channel
while they operate (also illgally) up by the police
calls. (Full disclosure: I stole that line from
George Carlin; no Barnicleisms here).
