That's exactly what I mean: Like when you're tired and--especially after being in a noisy room--the voices and sounds in your thoughts sort of "jump out" at you. It's the audio equivalent of laying on your bed, half asleep, and sometimes it seems like the room is getting bigger and bigger (or you're getting smaller and smaller!).
In terms of audio compression, it's that "plugged in", "electrified" "canyon effect" you get with the decay, horns and string instrument: A lot of TV record commercials tend to use it (or at least a lot *used* to)--e.g., WNDS-50 NH.
