Re: The late WBZ-FM, "Stereo 106.7, All hits...all the time"

Howdy:
Back in 1981, you had to notify all stations within 35 miles of
your location of your intent to change your call-letters. It could be
delayed by any station who felt that your intended call-letters
confuse their listeners. Basically, they could complain simply for
the sake of complaining. Why? Because they could. So, in July, 1981,
WBZ-FM was sold to Greater Media for about $4.5 million. However,
they did not take possession until the last week of December of that
year. So, Greater Media requested that Westinghouse go ahead and
apply for the WMJX call-letters. They wanted to have a proper set of
call-letters to denote their intended and highly successful "Magic"
format that was heard on their co-owned WMGK-FM(102.9) (formerly
WPEN-FM) in Philadelphia.
For nearly six months, you heard "Continuous Rock and Roll,
WMJX/Boston". That was it.
