WBUR signal
In this weekend's NERW, Scott Fybush made reference to
an application for a holy-roller FM CP on 91.1 mhz
in Winchendon, MA. There's already a facility of this
nature on 90.7 in Manchester, NH. This happens because
WBUR operates at less than maximum power with a
directional antenna. I live about 30 miles north of
WBUR's transmitter, fortunately just at the cusp of a
good but not great signal. Just last Friday Dec 18,
while WGBH-FM was carrying continuous coverage of
the impeachment hearings, I had to listen to "All
Things Considered" on WBUR while driving in NH. The
station was susceptible to dropout and interference
up there. If you look at Elliott's FM database for
WBUR, you'll see they have a listing for CURRENT
facilities, and APPLIED FOR facilities. Same ERP
and HAAT. I assume this means WBUR wants to go
omni-directional from directional but I'm not sure.
WSMU in North Dartmouth now at 91.1 is listed with
a CP for a change in frequency to 89.3. I haven't
been in the vicinity of New Bedford-Fall River since
the summer, and I know WSMU was still on 91.1 then.
Do any
Boston radio interest groupies in the the SouthCoast
have any information about this...and what are WBUR's
plans once the frequency swith at WSMU happens? Also
what's keeping WBUR from being as powerful as it
could be...the 90.9 in Gorham,ME? If BU can afford
to buy AM's in RI, maybe they could ask Dr. Silber
to donate a few bills to move the Gorham operation
to a different frequency. As commercial radio gets
dumber and dumber, an unrestriced full-power WBUR
becomes more and more a necessary.
