I was listening to WBZ around 5:30 last evening on my way to a work
commitment, they blew out all local news/spots/traffic on the 3's to carry
ABC Radio's continuous coverage, including President Clinton's address to
the nation at 6PM.I then was away from the radio till I was on my way home
just about 9,when I heard the Bruins on BZ.Went over to WRKO,the Two Chicks
were doing their weekly Wednesday night look at "Weird News"with guest
Michael Pingree from the Herald. The chicks did mention something to the
effect that despite the Iraq and Impeachment situations,we mustn't let that
keep us from our Wednesday night ritual.I too remember when the Challenger
exploded in 1986.Was at work in Downtown Lowell, first heard it on WCAP.They
were carrying the ABC Radio feed of the shuttle launch, which they(and a lot
of other radio/TV stations)hadn't carried a shuttle launch in a while as
most were fairly routine, but this launch featured Concord NH teacher
Christa McCauliffe.I remember hearing that something went wrong followed by
the confirmation of the explosion.WCAP stayed with ABC for several hours
after that,all spots/local programming set aside,to carry NASA's press
confrences,President Reagan's address to the nation, etc. This was back when
there were still people staffing studios in local radio stations across the
land, which seems to be less common these days, thanks to satellite and
canned voice track automation.

Mark Watson (old enough to remember live local radio)
