WWLI/"Lite 105" (was: WWLT)

WPJB was sold early in 1985 from the Providence Journal-Bulletin
to Narragansett Broadcasting, with sister station WEAN (790). At that
time, WPJB was running a soft-contemporary format...much like today's
WWLI. What they did for the next few months was very interesting.
They switched to a Top-40 format, to get rid of the old WPJB audience.
Little did they realize that they created a monster. The interim
format actually BEAT WPRO-FM !!! They DID NOT want that ! They were
committed to the upcoming "Lite 105" format. So one morning in July,
1985 during Gary De Grade's (sp) morning show they had a phone-in
contest.......

"What is the OPPOSITE of being "ALIVE" ? "

After numerous airhead answers from the audience, somebody got
the RIGHT answer.

 "DEAD ??"

That was the last you heard of WPJB. Immediately a somber voice
came on the air and said......

"Ladies and gentleman..... WPJB is DEAD !!" complete with a funeral
durge in the background. OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. This message
would be the staple of the dying WPJB until 7:00 pm. Then we were
treated with "You Light Up My Life" for hours more with a teaser
talking about the "spotlights over Providence". At midnight, the new
"Lite 105" (WWLI) hit the air.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.............

Providence radio has been sleepy ever since.
