WRND (91.7 Manchester NH) is back on the air after about a year of
silence...this time as another link in the chain of New Hampshire Public
Radio. NHPR president/GM Mark Handley tells me the station remains in
the hands of Notre Dame College. Apparently the school is seeking to
unload the station but needs to keep it active to retain legal claim to
the property. Handley says NHPR's only obligation in this temporary
arrangement is to provide a legal ID for the station at the end of the
list of NHPR's other outlets. It's not clear at this time whether NHPR
will have any role in WRND's future, although Handley says the
organization seeks to be mentioned in some proposals currently being
worked on.
I first noticed an ID for WRND Friday at 5p.m. and continued to hear it
throughout the weekend. As Paul Hopfgarten noted, the ID doesn't
always get mentioned--this morning at 7, for instance, I'm sure Jay
O'Neal
was doing the list of WEVH, WEVN, and WEVO and its 2 translators
by rote. WEVO continues to be "Concord-Manchester."
WRND is picking up WEVO's signal right off 89.1. It may be a help in a
few downtown Manchester buildings, but otherwise WRND adds nothing to
WEVO's coverage. Heading south on I-93 yesterday, I found the 91.7
signal starting to break up before the city limits while 89.1 remained
solid for at least another dozen miles. Using a different radio today,
I found similar results traveling down the Everett Turnpike toward
Nashua.
