It is unlikely that Channel 51 will hit the air, at least for the
foreseeable future. I think that Channel 45 will probably have a
dual affiliation with the WB and UPN, at least until the time being.
Channel 51 would still have to put a city grade over Pittsfield, MA.
The only way to do that and give a decent signal to the Capital
District is to move the transmitter to Mt. Greylock. No easy chore.
I have been told by some reliable sources that the tower and
transmitter shack on Greylock are unable to house another full-powered
TV or FM transmitter due to space restrictions and the
"powers-that-be" don't want another big building on the summit.
Channel 19's (WCDC-TV) signal from Mt. Greylock in the Capital
District is somewhat spotty in many parts of the
Albany-Schenectady-Troy area. WAMC-FM (90.3) who also transmits from
Mt. Greylock is subject to ooodles of multipath. I know, I've heard
it.
As for WMHT-TV (Channel 17), I guess they want to use the
proceeds for the sale of WMHX/45 to cover for the cost of upgrading to
HDTV. Something tells me that WMHT never really had any big plans for
Channel 45 in the first place, since they bought the station from
Union Street Video. Take a look at Channel 45's track record since
being owned by WMHT. It was off the air for quite a long time in the
eighties. They even lost their original call-letters of WMHQ due to
the extended period of abscence. They came back as WMHX, with a
limited schedule. Any station-breaks consisted of a character
generated slide saying what the next program would be for nearly three
minutes, and that was it. Channel 45 was basically the overflow of
Channel 17, much in the way Channel 44 (WGBX-TV) in Boston was the
overflow of Channel 2 (WGBH-TV).
As for Channel *29, you figure they must have figured out that
only one public TV station could survive in the Capital District.
Will they ever learn ?
