WLVI-TV Update
This morning (August 4th), a construction crane trying to place a relay
tower at the soon-to-be Greater Media building at 55 Morrisey Boulevard
in Dorchester tipped over, and both the crane and the tower fell into
the roof of the WLVI-TV 56 studios next door. The crane cab tipped over,
but the operator had only minor injuries.
WLVI-TV was off the air for about an hour (still transmitting carrier,
but no programming); the station is now (2:30 P.M.) back on by playing
tapes (and probably receiving the WB network feed) at it's Needham
transmitter site.
It is still not yet known when the building will be safe, or if
production and technical equipment was seriously damaged, or if the
station's 10 P.M. newscast will air tonight.
If there is a 10 P.M. news on WLVI tonight, it will probably be the
highest-rated newscast in WLVI history; will probably be the top-rated
TV show in Boston during that hour, and anchorman Jeff Barnd may open
the newscast by saying something like "Normally, we report the news.
Today, we became the news".
