Actually, the NRSC standards, provide for two different requirements
for the audio in an AM station. The first requirement is to limit the
audio passband to 11 kHz (not too bad). The second part of the standard
limits the amount of pre-emphasis that can be employed in the audio to
make up for the bad receivers.
The F.C.C. rules allow full power emission up to 11.2 kHz, anything
between 11.2 kHz and 20 kHz must be attenuated at least 25 dB below
carrier level
