You gotta remember that the 'purpose' of the network O & O's was to
support the sometimes 'fledgling' radio networks (especially CBS).....
clearing the network spots in the top markets.....and providing an ample
opportunity to air all those network 'features' that the network sells.
In most cases, the news/talk format fits the bill perfectly. They can
clear all those little network features that most stations would bawk at
.... And can also run the extra units of spots without incurring much
listeners wrath....
When your network owns a signal in the majors it assures you that you
can get the network stuff (sometimes network crap) aired.
And in the network biz...it appears that you *have to* get cleared in
the top 10 markets to get a decent rate for a national spot.
