station. As I recall the lineup (and my recollections could be VERY faulty),
it was something like: Emperor Hudson in AM Drive, Dr Joy Browne (locally
originated--before network talk radio) in late mornings, Pat Whitley at
middays, Jerry Williams in PM Drive, an early-evening sports-talk show with
a couple of very entertaining guys who I think are now both long dead. I
can't recall who was on later in the evenings or overnight. WITS also was
the Red Sox flagship for a couple of seasons. Bill Lawrence and Diane Stern,
who were at WBZ for many years, were two of the news people. (Stern may have
left 'BZ, but Lawrence is still there. I think that both Lawrence and Stern
were at the old 'EEI between WITS and WBZ; in fact, I think they were paired
in AM drive on 'EEI for several years.) WITS's news and public-affairs
director was Rich Kirkland, who, I believe, now works for Metro or Shadow.
So WITS had a news department. Kirkland hosted and produced a Sunday morning
public affairs show in the then-required weekly public-service ghetto.
(Ghettoizing the public-service programming was not an FCC requirement, but
devoting a certain amount of the broadcast week to public affairs was.)

newspapers and we can clear up what the lineup really was, but I just don't
ever recall WITS as all--or substantiall all--news, unless in their dying
days they went to round-the-clock CNN audio just to keep a signal on the
air. I don't recall that happening.
