That was a new station sometime in the very late 50s or early 60s. WPOP in
Hartford is directional north-south day and night (unlike its neighbor on
the dial, WDRC, which is ND daytime). The combination of WPOP being
directional and WOKW (I forget the current calls) being directional (to the
northeast to protect both WPOP and WBSM), made it possible to shoehorn WOKW
in. Despite WDRC being ND, co-channel WLYN is also ND because Lynn is
further from Hartford than Brockton is. Years ago, when WLYN put up a taller
tower to give (then) WLYN-FM (now WFNX) greater antenna height, WLYN had to
cut back its power to 700W to keep the contours where they were with 1 kW
and the shorter stick. WLYN just makes it under the old rules as far as
prohibited overlap with WFEA and WDRC.
