WQEW
Howdy Folks:
The reason that WQEW has that "shortwave sound", better known as
"selective fading" is that 1560 IS on the bottom limit of the shortwave
spectrum (or the top of the MW spectrum, if you like). When you
transmit on the higher end of the AM band, more of your station's signal
goes skyward. It does the "skywave" thing. Imagine how some of those
X-band stations are going to sound at night with 1,000 watts and most of
it going to the skywave. The groundwave will be good for maybe 6 or 8
miles, then watch out.
Fortunately, WQEW is a quality station with a fine signal to match.
They seem to take real pride on a quality product both on the air and
technically. I am 38 years old and basically a "rock and roller". But,
at night when I drive home from work after 10 pm (in the Boston area), I
hit one of my presets to 1560 and really enjoy those "American Popular
Standards". At home, I use my SRF-A100 (Sony) and enjoy their AM stereo
sound. WQEW sounds "ballsy" (for the lack of a better term). It
reminds me of how clean and strong the late WNEW/1130 sounded. In fact,
it's even better !
I listen to 'QEW, even with the selective fading. It's just THAT
good !
