Well I've never heard Opie and Anthony but I guess I'll to have to deal =
with that myself.=20
Couple of real thoughts:
Apart from anything else, what's amazing about this is, is that by =
traditional standards, claiming the mayor was dead when he isn't is not =
funny. People looking for a non-existent April Fools' parade is funny, =
the Plummett Mall (remember the underground shopping center) is funny, =
even people stumbling around in Jello is funny by traditional standards, =
if not mine. Anything to do with chickens is funny. Or a man in his =
underwear.
But saying a man is dead when he's not is not funny or clever. Hey do =
any of the WAAF listeners really care about Menino? LIke, hey he died, =
ok, sorry, what else is happening.
Now do our more astute historians remember the Rhode Island incident a =
few years ago where someone's death was announced and a couple people =
got fired including the cheif engineer over the incident? The facts are =
mixed up in my mind between that and an actual shooting of a talk host, =
I think. Wonder if the people involved with that prank made it to the =
big time.
Notwithstanding that one of the CFR's in Title 47 I believe prohibits =
false or deceptive news, there's a bigger problem here, and it's related =
to the one we complain about every day.
Credibility.
Ultimately the only thing a radio station has to sell is credibility. =
Not that we have to be stuffy authority figures, but when, say Stern =
does a bit, people think it's clever and they have an emotional response =
and they're rewarded for having tuned in.=20
If I tuned into a story and heard about a guy who died and he really =
didn't die, this doesn't make me want to listen again, it's just stupid =
and I'd think listening to this station was a waste of time.=20
See even when Mancow blocked the bridge in San Francisco to get a =
haircut it may have been damaging, but it made a point and was a stunt =
that causes an emotional reaction.
The O&A effort just places radio into the category of "waste of time". =
We had enough of that in high school.
