Here's info on the old and new homes of WTOP-FM:

The current (94.3) has 3 kilowatts from 397 feet HAAT. The new one (107.7)
has 33 kilowatts from 1,199 feet HAAT.

The reason for the FM signal in the western suburbs (in Virginia) is quite
obvious: KSTP. WTOP (something I didn't know until someone recently told
me through this newsgroup--thanks!) is quite directional, with little
 signal beamed to the west.

Perhaps WTOP should look for a new AM transmitter site about 15 miles to
the west of the current one. That should be enough to cover the whole
market with AM, and still be close enough to the old site so there'd be
 no interference to KSTP.

Of course, the extreme Western suburbs (e.g. Tyson's Corner and the Dulles
Airport area) of QWashington were once very rural and the existing WTOP
signal was quite adequate. But, I've heard that that area of Virginia has
grown in recent years, first thanks to the airport and then, thanks to
the Tyson's Corner Mall, which is supposed to be one of the largest in
 the nation.
