WBZ-TV's first day



Kevin and others should not be surprised to find little coverage about
WBZ-TV's first official day--  for one thing, most of the good radio/TV
columnists at the papers had retired. I'm not joking:  the late 40s were a
time when the Boston Post started to be in dire financial straits, and its
columnist Howard Fitzpatrick was reaching retirement age.  The Globe used
Elizabeth Sullivan but she only wrote sporadically.  The Transcript was
gone.  The Herald had only an occasional radio/TV column, and usually on
Sundays.  Music and moveis got a lot more attention-- perhaps because they
weren't perceived as direct competition to newspaper, and because they
advertised in the newspapers...
