I always thought it was similar to the football players who would say
"Hi Mom!" when the camera was on them.  

There were many comediens who did the "I never grew up" shtick....

Abbott & Costello..."I want my mama...!"

Joe Besser...."No so harrrrrd!"

And Dale has always maintained the "infantile' 'on-air' persona during
his career.    

He always sounds like a little kid about to get in trouble....
