Why has Country radio never made a permanent niche in Boston. In a
word.....lifestyle. We Bostonians are notoriously "high strung" and are
so "on-the-go". In fact, anywhere in the Boston-Providence-New York
corridor, it seems like we are all "busy" and we listen to music that
suits our lifestyle. Country is in the middle of all of this. It seems
that Country music has a "stereotype" of being only for the "hicks" or
folks with half their teeth missing. Which is hardly the truth. It is
quality music with a story to tell. The music heard on WJMZ "Jam'n 94.5"
is a basically Urban and has a high energy beat that apparently hits a
good amount of the population. WODS "Oldies 103" or WROR/105.7 hits a
large amount of the workforce who love to hear the music they grew up
with. WCRB hits a more upscale audience with its' Classical music.ce
The list goes on. Basically, you either need something with a beat
or need something like WMJX to lull you off to sleep.
What does this all mean ? Simply this, it has been sometime now
for any Boston or New York City station to make a real dent in the
ratings with a full-powered signal. WKLB is doing its' best but is
still not getting anything higher than a high 2 or low 3 with ANYrk
consistancy. New York City doesn't even have a full-powered FM playing
Country anymore. Any
Any thoughts ?
