I wouldn't say mediocrity wins....most people just can't tell the
difference.  To your average person, a satellite station with an experienced
announcer with a good voice and delivery sounds a lot better than some local
yokel with neither.

As far as this "great groundswell" of support for locally produced radio,
dream on.  Look at retail, everyone is all in favor of local merchants, and
bemoans it when another empty storefront appears on Main St, but of course
they themselves find it more convenient to go to the mall.
