Actually that story goes back to the days when WHDH was owned by a family
from Gloucester, and they had studios in both Gloucester (from whence they
did a daily fishermen's show) and Boston. While WHDH was just a randomly
assigned call from when the station went on the air in 1929-30, the standing
joke was that the signal stood for 'we haul dead haddock' because the
station directed so much of its programming to the fishermen that it annoyed
those who wanted 'regular programming'. The FRC required that you serve
your city of license back then, and programming for the fishermen and -women
was what the ownership had agreed to...
