Strange DX....

     Like Kevin Vahey, I too have heard my share of strange DX events in
my over thirty years of scanning the bands.  Like many folks back in the
late 1970's,  I got the "before sunrise" reception of KFI/640...back when
AM radio was really "Clear Channelled".  I was amazed when I got KTRH/740
from Houston about five years ago.  This was when CBL/Toronto shut down
at 0130 daily and only a hint of CHCM/Marystown, Nfld. was to be heard.
I was told later that KTRH only sends a few hundred watts of power toward
this area.  NOT BAD, eh.  Also, while I was on vacation in Phoenix some 
years ago, I heard KRVN/880 from Nebraska clear as a bell several HOURS
before sunset.  Their stereo signal was virtually noise free.  And of
course, while driving on Van Buren in Downtown Phoenix...I tried the
Mighty 1030 (just for the hell of it).  Lo and behold under K-TWO/Casper,
the famous "2-5-4...5-6-7-8" telephone number made it through the slop.
That is, of course, was the old telephone number for WBZ in Boston.
2600 miles away and it made through the noise.  Of course, I heard WLS/890
under KDXU/St. George, UT. and one of my favorites...WHAS/840 from
Louisville.
     I am sure the AM band in the Valley of the Sun is loaded with more
crap than ever due to the unflex of peanut whistle stations that have
populated the once mighty "Clear Channels".  WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE
ONCE MIGHTY AM BAND.  Such a waste.
